# GABA – 100mg/vial (Research Use Only)

### Overview

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system, mediating approximately 30–40% of all CNS synaptic transmission through ionotropic GABA-A and GABA-C receptors and metabotropic GABA-B receptors. As the endogenous agonist for the most pharmacologically significant inhibitory receptor system in the brain — the target of benzodiazepines, barbiturates, neurosteroids, and general anesthetics — GABA is among the most extensively researched neurotransmitters in pharmacology. Research interest also extends to peripheral GABA receptor systems, including pancreatic beta-cell GABA signaling and immune cell GABA receptor biology.

### What It Is

GABA (4-aminobutanoic acid) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid with molecular formula C₄H₉NO₂, MW approximately 103.12 Da, CAS number 56-12-2. It is synthesized from L-glutamate by glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) using pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin B6) as cofactor, and catabolized via the GABA shunt (GABA transaminase → succinic semialdehyde → succinate entering TCA cycle). GABA-A receptor activation directly increases Cl⁻ conductance, hyperpolarizing the neuronal membrane. GABA-B receptor activation (Gi-coupled) reduces cAMP and modulates K⁺ and Ca²⁺ channels.

### Key Research Applications

- GABA-A receptor pharmacology — chloride channel gating, subunit composition, and allosteric modulator research
- GABA-B receptor (Gi-coupled) signaling, presynaptic inhibition, and K⁺/Ca²⁺ channel modulation studies
- GABAergic synapse formation, GABA transporter (GAT1-4) expression, and reuptake studies
- Glutamate/GABA balance and excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmission research
- Pancreatic beta-cell GABA signaling and paracrine regulation of glucagon secretion studies
- Immune cell GABA receptor expression and immunomodulatory function research
- Anxiolytic and sedative mechanism studies — GABA-A receptor subunit selectivity research
- GABA shunt metabolism, TCA cycle integration, and neuroenergetics studies
