Overview
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide with one of the broadest tissue distribution profiles of any signaling peptide in mammalian biology. Originally isolated from the small intestine but subsequently found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, immune tissues, lungs, pancreas, and cardiovascular system, VIP acts on two G-protein coupled receptors (VPAC1 and VPAC2) to produce potent vasodilatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects.
What It Is
VIP is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide of the glucagon/secretin superfamily with MW ~3,326 Da, CAS number 37221-79-7. It is equipotent at VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, which couple primarily to adenylyl cyclase/cAMP signaling. VIP is co-released with acetylcholine in autonomic neurons and plays major roles in non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) neurotransmission.
Key Research Applications
- VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptor binding, cAMP signaling, and downstream pathway studies
- Pulmonary vasodilation, airway smooth muscle relaxation, and bronchoprotection research
- Neuroinflammation and microglial activation modulation research
- Immunomodulatory research — T-cell, macrophage, and dendritic cell activity studies
- Circadian rhythm regulation and suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) VIP signaling research
- Pancreatic exocrine and endocrine secretion (insulin, glucagon) modulation studies
- Gastrointestinal motility, NANC neurotransmission, and enteric nervous system research
- Neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory mechanism studies in CNS disease models
