Research FAQ
What is BPC-157 studied for?
BPC-157 is studied for localized tissue repair — tendon, ligament, bone, and gut — largely through VEGFR2-driven angiogenesis. Sold for research use only.
How does BPC-157 differ from TB-500?
BPC-157 is studied for localized structural repair via angiogenesis, while TB-500 is studied for systemic cell migration via actin regulation. They are complementary and often researched together.
Mechanism of Action
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a pentadecapeptide derived from a protein found in gastric juice. In preclinical models it is associated with angiogenesis via upregulation of VEGF pathways, with collagen production in tendon and ligament tissue, and with nitric oxide synthesis affecting inflammatory signalling and vascular tone. Published work spans musculoskeletal, neurological and vascular tissue models as well as the gut.
Research Overview
Animal-model research reports accelerated healing of Achilles tendon transections, ligament ruptures and muscle tears, with histological evidence of improved collagen organisation versus untreated controls. Gut-directed studies report restoration of intestinal epithelial integrity and reduced NSAID-induced ulceration. More than 80 preclinical studies have been published, spanning musculoskeletal, neurological and gastrointestinal models. Human evidence is not established.
Research & Stack Notes
Oral routes appear in gut-directed research designs. The published literature also examines BPC-157 alongside TB-500, which acts through actin sequestration rather than VEGF signalling. No interactions with GLP-1, cognitive or longevity compounds are documented in that literature.

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with an extensive published preclinical research profile spanning gastrointestinal biology, musculoskeletal repair modeling, neuroscience, and angiogenesis research. Derived from a partial sequence of a gastroprotective protein described in the peer-reviewed literature, BPC-157 is notable for its acid-stable properties, which are of interest in studies examining peptide pharmacokinetics and in vitro stability under gastrointestinal simulation conditions.
What It Is
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val and a molecular weight of approximately 1,419 Da. It represents a partial sequence of a body protection compound described in the peer-reviewed literature and is notable for its acid-stable properties in in vitro pharmacokinetic assay conditions.
Research Spotlight
More than 100 peer-reviewed preclinical studies have investigated BPC-157 across a range of biological models. Gastrointestinal research has focused on mucosal integrity, investigating interactions with the nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway and cytoprotective mechanisms in rodent ulceration and inflammatory bowel models. Musculoskeletal studies have placed BPC-157 in tendon transection, ligament tear, and bone repair models, measuring biomechanical and histological endpoints across multi-week time courses. Published neuroscience research has documented BPC-157’s interactions with dopaminergic, serotonergic, and GABAergic systems in rodent behavioral and pharmacological models. Angiogenesis research has examined VEGF expression and capillary network formation markers in wound and tissue repair models. BPC-157 has also been studied in models of organ and tissue damage, with published investigations examining hepatic, renal, and vascular preparations.

Regulatory Status Note
On July 23–24, 2026, FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee reviewed whether BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, Semax, Epitalon, and emideltide (DSIP) should be added to the 503A Bulks List for pharmacy compounding. The committee voted to recommend six of the seven; emideltide (DSIP) was not recommended. FDA’s own briefing documents had recommended against all seven.
A committee vote is a recommendation only. It does not constitute FDA approval, does not establish safety or effectiveness, and does not change the status of this product, which is sold strictly for research use. FDA must complete formal rulemaking before any substance is added to the list. Source: FDA Advisory Committee Calendar. Last reviewed: August 17, 2026.
Update — July 24, 2026: On July 23, the committee voted. BPC-157, KPV, and TB-500 each passed 8-6 with one abstention; MOTS-c passed 7-5 with two abstentions. The recommendation is non-binding — FDA is not required to follow it, must still issue a formal decision, and the process may require additional rulemaking before any compounding pharmacy could act on it. No peptide has been FDA-approved, and this update does not constitute or imply a therapeutic claim. Source: STAT News
At a Glance: Four Separate Questions
- Research status: Sold for research/laboratory use only, not as a consumer drug.
- Compounding status: An FDA advisory committee recommended possible inclusion on the 503A Bulks List (non-binding). FDA has not issued a final decision.
- FDA approval status: Not FDA-approved for any use.
- Evidence status: Preclinical/animal research on tissue and tendon repair; no completed human clinical trials have established safety or efficacy for any condition.
Last reviewed: August 9, 2026 — status unchanged (still an advisory committee recommendation; not final 503A inclusion or FDA approval). See our full explainer on these four categories.
